Violence in Catalonia needed closer scrutiny in age of fake news

Peter Preston

A failure to check pictures of those supposedly hurt in recent independence demonstrations did journalism no favours
With fake news apparently leaking from every media orifice, you’d have hoped for a little more diligence over those Catalan referendum demonstration figures and images. Over to the fact-checkers …

“We’ve seen a lot of fake pictures on people who have been hurt by the police, but were really pictures from different demonstrations,” said the head checker for the El Objective TV show. He produced web pictures of bleeding protesters that went viral – but they were old stuff from a miners’ strike five years ago. That woman who had all her fingers broken. She hadn’t. That six-year-old boy, paralysed by police brutality? It didn’t happen. Serious injuries on the day: just two.

When you plough through this account and many others, different perspectives begin to surface. Not that the civil guard’s truncheon-wielding interventions weren’t violent and frightening. But that the reporting of what happened – including the detail of those 893 injured voters – hadn’t been independently checked. Which is important, even at this stage. There’s no bonus to fear and loathing built on frail foundations.

TV-3 recognizes for the first time that the declaration of independence was 'fake'

-->
A report issued in the Telenotícies Migdia of this Sunday maintains that it was a "declaration of intentions"

The TV-3 news programs have changed the way of referring to the declaration of independence on October 27, 2017. For the first time ever, in the  Telenotícies of this past Sunday it has been openly stated that this declaration of independence was not effective, but rather it was a simply simbolic declaration of intentions which was not published in the official bulletins. A perspective coincidental with the line of defense raised last week by the former minister of Home Affairs Joaquim Forn during the oral hearing of the trial in the Supreme Court: he declared that "the independence was not declared at all".
Thus, the Telenotícies of this Sunday at noon has issued a report in which, among other testimonies, the statements of Carme Forcadell to the judge are heard; she said: "It is a symbolic political declaration, Your Honor. No parliamentary procedure was initiated because, as you said, it was not registered nor voted." Likewise, a statement from the leader of ERC Marta Rovira is included, in which she affirmed: "It could not have any effects, because we knew what was the political context that was on the board".

Statements of a former lawyer of Parliament

Was the declaration symbolic? Did it actually get to be voted? Josep Maria Martí Rigau, a journalist with great political experience, responds to these questions, pointing out that "that day in the Parliament of Catalonia everything was being prepared not to get hurt. In the end, there was fear".

The voice in off in the piece emphasizes that the fact that what was voted was "a proposal of resolution" results in the declaration not being really a law but only a “declaration of intentions”.

The report includes statements by Francesc Pau, a former lawyer of the Parliament, who maintains: "Parliaments pass laws that have legal effects and resolutions that do not have any legal effects; the Parliament expresses an opinion. It does not go further".

Something else was voted

The journalist points out that, although Forcadell reads the declaration of independence in the Parliament, she herself makes it clear that the part to be voted on is quite another. It is also highlighted the fact that the Secretary General and the principal lawyer of the Parliament leave the plenary session at the very time of the voting, and that this declaration is not published in the official bulletin of the Parliament. During the oral hearing of the trial, the prosecutor Javier Moreno was wrong in his argument in the session on previous issues when he pointed to the declaration as published in the official gazette of the Generalitat.

On October 26, EL PERIÓDICO published a research report in whith details on how the “fake UDI was created. Thus, at the meeting of the Board of the Parliament on the 27th, it was made clear that only the operative part, not the preamble, was "subjected to voting and approval", and therefore, that the resolution had no "legal effects". The Board also wanted to leave in a written record that the preamble, which included the declaration of independence proper, would not be put to a vote.

The other trick was the format of the text itself. A proposal for a resolution was voted, which in parliamentary dynamics is nothing more than a document that urges the Government to take a series of decisions. Neither was an institutional declaration nor a proposition with the rank of law. And what that text called upon the Executive was to approve all the decrees and resolutions necessary to develop the law of legal transition -which created a new Catalan legal framework-, starting with the "expedition to the citizenship" of the Catalan identity documents.

Borrell warns that secessionism "builds a new black legend"

The independentist movement is "committed to building a new black legend" of Spain.

The Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, has warned on Wednesday of the scope of the independence speech and has advocated to curb its credibility abroad. "It is in danger no more or less than the territorial integrity of the State," he warned at an information breakfast held in Madrid. On the occasion of the start of the trial of the procés, his ministry has intensified the diplomatic offensive that has been rehearsing for some time to counter the messages of the Catalan independence movement. Borrell met Tuesday with all the ambassadors of EU countries in Spain and his number two was met with representatives of the EU institutions in Strasbourg. There were also information sessions in the main Spanish embassies.

The Government emphasizes that the Catalan secessionism has not harvested a single institutional support in the world. Neither the European organizations nor the government officials of any State have extended their hand to the Catalan representatives since they undertook the path of independence. But its speeches do make a dent in different forums of public opinion. Borrell appealed this morning to what he called Spanish civil society to ask for collaboration. "Help us. Do not fall into that Spanish attitude to talk about what we do wrong to gloat, "he said during the presentation of an act of New Economy Forum in which Irene Lozano, Secretary of State of Spain Global.

In addition to asking citizens for their efforts, the Foreign Minister has stepped on the accelerator coinciding with the start of the trial. Borrell had lunch on Tuesday, the day of the first session of the case, with all the ambassadors from the EU countries highlighted in Madrid. On the same day, six of the main Spanish embassies abroad (including Berlin, London, Rome and Washington) organized informative meetings to defend the democratic credentials of Spain. And the Secretary of State for the European Union, Marco Aguiriano, has traveled to Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament and meeting place this week of the three community institutions, to convey a similar message. There he has met with the heads of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council.

Borrell lamented the "ferocious attacks" and "the fake news" that, in his opinion, propagates the independence world. "The independence movement is desperately looking for international mediation in Spain. They want to give the impression that it is a problem that affects the whole EU, which is why they discredit the image of Spain. That path will not take you anywhere, "he predicted.

Irene Lozano, whose portfolio has as its main mission to defend Spanish reputation abroad, has also recently traveled to Geneva, Brussels and London to reinforce the message that Spain is a credible country endowed with solid and democratic institutions. In a few weeks she will begin another tour that will take her to the United States, among other territories. Asked about the possible erosion that the trial of the procés may cause to the Spanish image, Lozano replied: "The trial gives the image of a country where the rule of law exists. It is a court with all the guarantees and in which the presumption of innocence applies. "

Independentist campaign to instruct foreign correspondents

Ignasi Jorro

Independence campaign to instruct foreign correspondents.

The secessionist association Foreign Friends of Catalonia offers "help" to reporters who want to disclose "the sociopolitical reality of Catalonia."

The announcement was made last weekend by the professor at the University of Munich (Germany) and sympathizer of the separatist cause, Thomas G. Schulze. In a tweet in his personal account, the academic informed "all journalists and media interested in Catalonia: everyone at Foreign Friends of Catalonia is here to help you". According to him, "we will not tell you what you have to think or write, we will simply open the doors". "Come, look for yourself and speak is a new initiative of FFC, welcome and welcome!"

Accommodation and interviews

The initiative will be conveyed through the request of invitations. "All journalists who are interested in staying with a Catalan family (who will offer you a free stay) can contact us, we will help you carry out the interviews you want to understand what is happening in Catalonia", added the official account of the initiative. Although it is sold as a neutral project to help free information, the two Foreign Friends of Catalonia channels - Twitter and its channel of the Telegram messaging network - publish only news favorable to independence.

The initiative is also linked to the #DiadaForeign platform, which invited foreigners to participate in the independence demonstration called by the proseparación entities on September 11, 2018, Diada de Cataluña. The website of the project is registered in the name of Patricia Vila Armangué, an activist for independence and founder of this peculiar education service on the separation of Catalonia from Spain.

Pressures to journalists

It should be remembered that this is not the first time that the independence movement has flirted with international correspondents as a vehicle to amplify its cause. The Guardian reporter Dan Hancox already complained in 2016 of pressures from the then press chief of Artur Mas, Joan Maria Piqué, currently liaison of the fugitive ex-president Carles Puigdemont with the international media. At that time, Hancox lamented that Piqué "did not stop complaining about the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, before him".

In April of this year, the self-proclaimed Committees of Defense of the Republic (CDR) published the pamphlet Raons per la República, also addressed to journalists. In the brochure, they described themselves as citizens "who carried out peaceful actions". The CDRs attributed the violence to the "infiltrated police" and charged against the "lies of the Spanish press". They denied that street violence existed in Catalonia and attributed the incidents to a "climate of opinion that the Government wants to create."

Berlinale: The team of 'Dos Cataluñas' returns the Cinema for Peace prize given by Puigdemont - Alvaro Longoria co-director explains that they felt manipulated. -

Álvaro Longoria, co-director of the documentary, explains that they felt manipulated and that it goes against "the spirit of the film"

The co-director of the documentary Dos Cataluñas, Álvaro Longoria, has returned on Tuesday morning the prize he received on Monday night from the Cinema for Peace Foundation, which was given to him by Carles Puigdemont, who went to Berlin to attend the gala. In a letter he has delivered together with the trophy, Longoria says: "We believe that the act of delivery has not been impartial and has failed our professional ethics and one of the key principles of our documentary, neutrality"

In an interview with EL PAÍS, the filmmaker, known both for directing documentaries and for his work as a producer through the company Morena Films, underlined:

"We did not know the details of the delivery, only that we were nominated, and nobody spoke to us of a previous political discourse ", what Puigdemont did when he took the stage.

"For the people of the former Catalan president we learned a few days ago of the possibility of his presence"; says Longoria, "and we insisted that the organization not be seated at our table, because our film does not want to be a piece of information manipulation, but a denunciation of these acts".

From Cinema for Peace, which has Mikhail Gorbachev as honorary president, they explained that Puigdemont was not even going to speak. "Suddenly, we saw him go on stage, with what I thought we had won, and he made his own speech," says Longoria. His codirection partner, Gerardo Olivares, also present in Berlin, decided not to attend the dinner when he learned of the presence of the politician. "I did it because I had already confirmed and because the Foundation had insisted on not manipulating the event." Together with Puigdemont, the German soprano Anna Maria Kaufmann, who sang Do not cry for me Catalonia, version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic Do not cry for me Argentina.

During his speech, the expresident related, according to the attendees, a chronology of the events that occurred in Catalonia. And he explained: "Tomorrow begins a trial in Madrid against members of the Government of Catalonia, social leaders and the former president of the Catalan parliament for organizing a referendum on independence in our country [...] In addition, seven other members of Parliament and the Government they are living in exile, in three different European countries. " Before entering the dinner, the politician assured a group of journalists: "For me it is important to be present at this event in a framework of recognized prestige that highlights the cinematographic works in favor of human rights and particularly peace with the that we feel very committed. "

Dos Cataluñas won in the category Cinema for Peace and Justice, which also competed the silence of others, Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar.

The documentary, produced by Netflix on the last months of the independence process, consists of two hours organized mainly with contributions from politicians, journalists, political scientists, academics ...

In the process of documentation and filming, the authors made up to 85 interviews, always with the idea that it was fair and that there were voices from all sides.
Cinema for Peace is a foundation based in Berlin, which started its activities after 9/11. Since 2002, it has been holding an awards gala in the German capital, taking advantage of the presence of numerous movie stars at the Berlinale. Among its members are Charlize Theron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who yesterday attended the gala. Other attendees included musician and activist Bob Geldof, actresses Catherine Deneuve, Faye Dunaway, Nastassja Kinski and Katja Riemann, film producers and German politicians such as former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

Marta Rovira, General Secretary of ERC, fugitive from Justice, stopped by Geneva police for using public space without authorization

On Friday, February 8, 2019, Marta Rovira, former secretary of the ERC - the Catalan Republican Left - once again this year brought all the leadership of its political party from Barcelona to mark a media and symbolic blow on the place of Nations, in Geneva.

Clarification: the president of this formation is in preventive prison for his participation in the attempted coup d'état in the Catalan autonomy on September 6 and 7, 2017.

At that time a short majority of pro-independence representatives had violated the Spanish constitution, the status of autonomy - the same one that had allowed them to be elected - and the qualified majority of two-thirds required in Catalonia. So to get rid of the opposition and force a new law of disconnection from Spain,

This in the most total denial of the majority of the Catalan population who does not share the views seditionists. The ratio is about 2 million in favor of independence against 5.4 million who feel both Spanish and Catalan and so are tied to double culture.

This Friday, Marta Rovira's maneuver was to hold a press conference on the iconic Place des Nations, at the height of the famous chair manifest against the use of anti-personal mines.

Surrounded by its dome, thirty people who flew with EasyJet the same morning, and as only media, the public Catalan TV3, separatist propaganda organ, financed with the taxes of all Catalans.

The illusion given by the imposing alley of flags, in front of the UN headquarters, is still good for a marketing plan. Worse, for an action of manipulation of the masses of which the Catalan separatist apparatus, of criminal origin, has the secret.

The place offers a solemn atmosphere and suggests a formal visit that actually does not take place. A

As once tried to make us believe, the journalist of the daily "The Time", Adrià Budry Carbo, with his article on the elected and separatist Catalan, also member of the ERC, Roger Torent: "In Geneva, Catalonia push his plan D.

"Note, in passing, the misleading title of paper Budry Carbo! Catalonia can not be mentioned when we know that the "independentist" do not represent half of the Catalan population of 7.5 million inhabitants.

Except that ... use of this place is subject to authorization. The request is to be made to the department managing the public spaces of the City of Geneva.

A phone call to the mentioned service then allowed to learn that no event of this hub was announced in the City of Calvin. Once the dome was set up for propaganda, the police were called to enforce the law and regulations. No offense to Mrs. Rovira who fled the Spanish justice in the winter of 2018 to find refuge in the charming Sardinian city of Carouge (GE). While loudly claiming her intention to continue her destabilizing activities against the Spanish democracy, from Switzerland.

We can thank the employee of the city service and the Geneva police officers for having intervened wisely, despite a "naïve" and romantic political and journalistic political climate that gives priority to the executioner.

We are happy to have confirmation that the law is the same for everyone.

However, one wonders further how long Geneva will show itself so accommodating with a separatist apparatus who goes against Catalan population through nationalism, supremacism, linguistic and street discrimination, political police and mass manipulation. Should we recall the recent appeals of the unelected president of the Generalitat ** Quim Torra to take the Slovenian way in Catalonia? That is to say, the war!

It is also unusual for a political party leadership to hold meetings abroad. Between the basic principle of freedom of expression and proportionality, our authorities seem to have missed a chapter.

Intervention: François Meylan and Catalunya People of Spain (CPDE), Lausanne.

Communiqué

Marta Rovira once again brought her entire staff (people) to Geneva, along with the Catalan public television TV3, a propagandist instrument with a colossal budget to lie.

To mark a strong political and symbolic act in the Place des Nations, Geneva.

After I checked with the public spaces service in the city of Geneva I learned that no authorization had been issued.

I immediately called the police and interrupted the protest.

The laws are the same for all. Undoubtedly, we have been far too complacent with individuals who are fomenting coups, which encourage indoctrination, corruption, political police and suprémacisme.

There's nothing to negotiate with the bandits. Only, enforce the law.

How the Catalan attempt at secession was illegal and undemocratic

Gabriel Colomé, Barcelona
The writer is a political science professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

To the editor: I was troubled to read the Jan. 21 article, “12 Catalan leaders face trial on charges of
 sedition and rebellion against Spain.”

I have tremendous respect for journalists’ they work under difficult circumstances, but I find the article extremely biased on the secessionist side. Most people in Catalonia do not support independence from Spain, and their point of view should also be heard. The secessionist electoral support stood at a peak of 47.5%.

When the Catalan parliament declared independence on Oct. 27, 2017, not only was the chamber half empty, but the declaration was made illegally. No sovereign country in the world recognized this declaration, which went against the Spanish Constitution. Furthermore, there was no democratic mandate.

The Spanish Constitution does not recognize a right to self-determination or secession for any of its regions, just as the U.S. does not recognize such a right for any of its states. What would Americans think if the Texas House of Representatives declared independence, contravening the U.S. Constitution and disregarding warnings from the U.S. Supreme Court?

The keys are dialogue among Catalans and consensus within Catalan society to seek common ground, all while respecting Spain’s constitutional framework.

Ex-president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart one of the authors of 'Contes per ser lliures': the book for children against the King and the judges The volume, published this week, disqualifies the Monarchy and the judiciary with eleven children's stories written by Jordi Cuixart, Lluís Llach or Bel Olid

Ignasi Jorro

Contes per ser lliures, in Catalan, or Tales to be free, in Spanish. It is the book for children that charges against the Monarchy and the judiciary in eleven children's stories that suspiciously resemble a country very similar to Spain. The volume has been edited by the so-called Association for Civil Rights of Catalonia (Adic) and, under the guise of defending liberties, charges against the political system and national legal order.

As reported by Efe, the copies, which are sold at a price of 15 euros in places such as Fnac, El Corte Inglés or La Casa del Libro, explain up to eleven civil and political rights to children, although with a very marked bias. For starters, the authors are all pro-independence activists, from the former Junts pel Yes (JxSí) Lluís Llach to the former CUP candidate Bel Olid, through the cook Ada Parellada, the presenter Empar Moliner, the former top official of the Generalitat Jordi Cabré - nephew of Xavier Trias, former mayor of Barcelona -, the ANC activist Jordi Calvís or the ex-president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart, today in preventive prison accused of sedition.

"The new kings imprison rappers"

The content is also peculiar. In the story that Llach describes the right to participate in public affairs, the singer says that "when there was no democracy minstrels who sang things contrary to the king of the day were sent to the stake, today are the new kings of democratic lie want to imprison clowns, rappers, mayors, deputies ... and storytellers. "

The cook Ada Parellada, who has to relate the right to freedom, gives life to the carom, a yellow tropical fruit. One day, these fruits arrive in a country where "the yellow color was forbidden because he had fallen on his head a little yellow bag" to the emperor.

The regime, then, "ordered the police to throw away, destroy or imprison everything that was yellow," the story continues. At one point in history, fruits are "deprived of freedom" until they are rescued and exported abroad, where they are seen, "as the best yellow fruits of the universe."
"A king whose crown is too heavy"

For its part, the writer, ex-candidate of the CUP to the Catalan parliament and Bel Olid tries to shed light on the right to a fair trial explaining that in an imaginary country a king dictated the laws "absurdly because the crown weighed too much "

The story explains that one day, a girl reprimands the head of state for his attitude and the crown and head explode and end "on the moon or on Mars." From that moment, the subjects of the nation learn to live without regents "with the rules that seemed best to all, with joy and freedom."

The volume has begun to market this week. It is self-publishing, that is, it is not edited by any publisher, and the benefits of it, says the pro-independence entity, will go to the imprisoned politicians to organize the process in Catalonia and their families.

Catalonia, the construction of a story - How has the independentist movement used identity populism to convince half of the Catalan population of the virtues of independentism?

David Álvaro

How have the separatists managed to convince almost half of the population?

Synopsis of Catalonia, the construction of a story:
The answer to the questions posed here and to many other questions is found in the use of marketing techniques applied to the political philosophy that has led to an identity populism that is difficult to refute. A tactical plan that has allowed to move from a moderate nationalism to a new ethnopopulism or identity populism with a conclusive final objective: the independence of Catalonia.

David Álvaro analyzes in the pages of this book the strategies that have allowed, in little more than fifteen years, the percentage of independentists to grow from 10 percent to 47 percent and how it has managed to create an almost hegemonic story in Catalonia , where emotions are imposed on reason and visceral arguments defeat the mental.

A journey through the independentist story in which populism and marketing go hand in hand to go farther than many, even from their own ranks, could have ever imagined.

Habeck, rising star of German politics, has come to the conclusion that networks, and especially Twitter, limit reflection and hinder political work

The rising star of German politics renounces social networks

The colleague of the German greens, criticized for his errors on the Web, maintains that Twitter exerts a negative influence on the public debate

Robert Habeck swims against the current. The brilliant colleague of the German Greens has announced that he gets off social networks, motivated by a series of errors on Twitter and as a consequence also of the massive data piracy of German politicians. Habeck, rising star of German politics, has come to the conclusion that networks, and especially Twitter, limit reflection and hinder political work, for its ability to model both the message and the messenger. And he has done it with an unusual exercise of self-criticism, recognizing that networks make him more aggressive and more prone to controversy.

Habeck heads the environmentalist party, which is going through a moment of political effervescence, thanks to a markedly pro-European and multicultural discourse. It is also the party that in Germany represents modernity and the counterpoint to the model of nostalgic society advocated by the far-right populists. Social networks are precisely the main propaganda tool with which the extremists spread their ideology with an intense intensity.

The trigger for Habeck's decision was a video message in which he argued that the Greens would do everything possible so that after the regional elections of autumn Thuringia, the German East German state in which they co-govern, is "free, open, liberal, democratic and ecological ". The tweeted storm did not wait. Deputy Social Democrat Carsten Schneider asked on Twitter "what kind of prison he had lived in recent decades." The regional grouping of the Greens apologized to those who would have been offended, but at that point the digital hurricane was already blowing uncontrollably over the Net. The added problem is that it was raining in the wet. Habeck had made a similar mistake last year, on the occasion of the elections in Bavaria, where he considered that the end of the supremacy of the Bavarian conservatives would mean the return of democracy.

In his blog, Habeck explained on Monday that his year has started badly in the digital arena. That on the one hand, the massive cyberattack perpetrated against German politicians has also affected the personal data of his family. But above all, having stumbled for the second time with the same stone with the statements about Thuringia kept him awake Sunday night through Monday. "How can you be so stupid as to be wrong twice in a row?", He asks in the blog post explaining the reasons for his digital withdrawal and in which he puts black on white some of the contradictions of social networks that completely affect politics and the rulers.

The green politician maintains that after much thought he has come to the conclusion that "Twitter is more aggressive than any other digital medium and that there is no other medium with so much hatred and malevolence". And he concludes that he has discovered that he is not immune to this trend of the social network, which has just over 48,000 followers. "Twitter makes me more aggressive, more strident, controversial and sharp. And everything at a speed that makes it difficult to have a space for reflection. " Habeck says that he aspires to the contrary, to understand the one in front of him and to take his worries seriously, instead of acting arrogantly and pretending that he knows everything.

Habeck also claims that the social network preferred by prominent leaders such as Donald Trump "disorients" and "desconcentra" and also feeds his vanity, when he finds himself checking what he thinks of him the Twitter world after having participated in a television debate or a party congress. This type of interaction, he concludes, becomes a kind of self-censorship and causes politicians to end up talking as the media wants and thinking of immediate triumphs instead of more calibrated long-term strategies.

Therefore, Habeck announced that it will erase its Twitter account and also Facebook, where private conversations are played, object of the recent massive data theft to the German political class. This is a radical decision at a time when polls put the Greens in second place in voting intention after Angela Merkel's center-right. The Greens are undoubtedly the star party of German politics and Habeck is one of the politicians most valued by public opinion. The ZDF public television survey last November ranked Habeck as the second of the ten best-rated politicians, after Bundestag president Wolfgang Schäuble.

The role of communication in Catalonia’s nation building: Jordi Pujol and the political instrumentalization of the media (1968-1989)

JOSEP ÀNGEL GUIMERÀ I ORTS
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

 Abstract

From the beginning of his political activity under the Franco regime and during
the 23 years of his presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Jordi Pujol showed
a great interest to intervene in the media. This article aims to describe and interpret
the actions carried out by Pujol to create and/or control the media in order to help
them achieve their political objectives during his anti-Francoist opposition activities
and his first two legislatures as president of the Generalitat. To achieve these objectives,
a qualitative research strategy was designed. It combines theoretical foundations
of political science and communication sciences and triangulates the techniques
of documentary analysis (legal framework, gray literature, monographs and scientific
articles, and memoirs) and in-depth interviews with the protagonists of the
actions analyzed, including Jordi Pujol himself. The result is an original research
that sheds light on the relations between political movements and the media during
the Spanish transition, a foundational moment in Spanish politics. The article shows
a clear interventionist will of Pujol on the media, considered by him as infiltrated by
leftist parties and hostile to Catalan nationalism. He always had an instrumental
conception of journalism, both for the promotion of his party and political ideas and
in the process of national (re)construction of Catalonia (a project that he shared with
other parties). According to the results obtained, Pujol made the creation of mass
media a fundamental objective of his political action.

Keywords  Nationalism; mass media; Catalonia; Jordi Pujol; political communication.

The populist social media playbook: the battle for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

What is populism?

Populists tend to frame politics as a battle between the virtuous 'ordinary' masses and a nefarious or corrupt elite – and insist that the general will of the people must always triumph. The Guardian is adopting the classic definition of populism proposed by political scientist Cas Mudde. Populism, he says, is often combined with a "host" ideology, which can either be on the left or right.
Populism is as old as democracy itself, but the last 10 years have proven particularly fertile: populist leaders now govern countries with a combined population of almost two billion people, while populist parties are gaining ground in more than a dozen other democracies, many of them in Europe.
Against this backdrop, the Guardian is launching a six-month investigative series to explore who the new populists are, what factors brought them to power, and what they are doing once in office.

TV3 disavows a television presenter for placing flowers as a nod to the independentist movement

Helena García Melero put on the table of her program some yellow Easter flowers that after a while disappeared from the screen.

A new controversy about the objectivity and plurality of TV3 and its professionals has once again hoarded headlines. The protagonist is now Helena García Melero, presenter of the space 'Tot es mou', who took a "small license" that has been reprimanded by the regional network.

The host of this TV3 program surprised by placing on the table of her program some yellow Easter flowers that were quickly interpreted as a nod to the Catalan independence movement: "I am going to allow myself a small license. We are going to adorn our political table with a small ponsetia, "he said while showing the flowers on the same day in which Quim Torra met with Pedro Sánchez.

After a few minutes, the flowers disappeared from the table without further explanation, which suggests that the presenter was forced to remove them.

It is not the first time that the eyes are focused on García Melero for openly showing his ideology. Weeks ago, the journalist encouraged the firemen and doctors to go "hand in hand with the republic" to protest against the cuts.

The propaganda machinery 'indepe' abroad sails at full steam

The supporters of the independence of Catalonia do not cease to promote the 'procés' abroad in order to win support that until now have been insignificant.

The Generalitat of Catalonia and its external service already has 13 territorial delegations abroad. In the eyes of current Catalan rulers, the 'embassy' of Madrid is also a representation abroad.

Who Forewarned is forearmed. Both 'President' Quim Torra and his Foreign Action Adviser, Ernest Maragall, have repeatedly announced it in recent months once the application of Article 155 has been repealed. Her delegate to the European Union, Meritxell Serret, is crystal clear in her intentions . In her Twitter profile she uses a transparent expression about the nature of his political mission: # FemRepública (# HacemosRepública).

The hand outstretched of Pedro Sánchez to Quim Torra in the Pedralbes palace on the 20th does not seem to make a dent in the tenacity of the independentists to continue digging trenches between Barcelona and Madrid. The official support obtained by the secessionists in the world has been scarce. The institutions of the European Union and multilateral organizations such as the United Nations have turned their backs on them. But they have achieved certain marginal support in the form of statements by politicians in places like the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and so on in 12 European countries.

Perhaps, the most outstanding international support is in Italy, where the 'procés' has always found a firm ally in the current vice president and interior minister, Matteo Salvini, at that time, leader of the Northern League.

Òmnium Cultural, with its 101 employees, is the spearhead to propagate all the 'independentists' claims in several languages.

The verifiable reality is that the trenches continue to expand officially through the foreign service or Diplocat and unofficially through online portals and blogs sheltered in one way or another by the Generalitat and organizations related to the independence movement as Omnium Cultural. A propaganda activity that seeks echoes abroad in several languages, apart from Catalan and Spanish, in languages such as English, French or German.

Internet, key propaganda factor Scottish academic Kathryn Crameri defends in her essay 'Goodbye Spain?

The Question of Independence for Catalonia '(' Goodbye Spain? The question of the independence of Catalonia ') that the internet and social networks have been fundamental for the pro-independence cause when it comes to communicating and mobilizing its loyal followers and potential supporters , both in Catalonia and abroad.

Not in vain, during the year 2017, in full independence offensive of the Executive of Carles Puigdemont, the Diplocat subsidized foreign initiatives that made propaganda in favor of 'procés' on the Net. As anticipated by El Confidencial from sources of the Civil Guard, the exterior machinery of the Catalan Government financed activists, politicians and journalists from Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom and Latvia to campaign to wrap up the October 1 referendum.

SOM, Societat Cooperativa Catalana Limitada, chaired by one of the media figures of secessionism receives large subsidies.

Som Batabat, like 23 other companies, is part of SOM, Societat Cooperativa Catalana Limitada. The president of the governing council of that cultural and media cooperative is Oriol Soler Castanys (Ripollet, 1969), one of the businessmen of the nearby circle of Carles Puigdemont and friend of Oriol Junqueras. He has been described as one of the great men who moves the mediatic crib of the
'procés'.

The businessman Oriol Soler, one of the ideologues of Catalan secessionism, meets with Assange at the Embassy of Ecuador in London. El País affirms that since then, Assange has been intensely involved in the secessionist crisis and has published a multitude of disinformations in the network in support of the procés and against the Spanish government, chaired by Mariano Rajoy. Soler went to the Embassy of Ecuador in London on November 9, located at number 3 of Hans Crescent. Soler, accompanied by Andreu Grinyó, marketing director of the online supermarket Ulabox and expert in network communication campaigns and related to the independence movement, held a meeting of approximately four hours with Assange. It happened between five in the afternoon and nine in the evening, Spanish time. This has not been the only visit to the Embassy of Ecuador in London related to the attempted secession in Catalonia. Last August, US Congressman Dana Rhorabacher, known in Washington as "Vladimir Putin's friend," visited the cyber-activist in London and promised him that he would mediate with Donald Trump to obtain a presidential pardon [the equivalent of a pardon] for Assange. .

The CEO of SOM is the journalist and editor Eduard Voltas i Poll, Secretary of Culture of the Generalitat between 2007 and 2010, just the period in which the ARA, now owned by the Carulla family, obtained almost one million euros in funds of the Government for its launch.

Soler Castanys founded the national newspaper ARA in 2010 through the company Edició de Premsa Periodica ARA SL, of which he was sole administrator until 2012. SOM sold its stake in that newspaper in 2016 for 240,000 euros, according to his deposited accounts. in the Commercial Registry.

The subsidies received by SOM and its different subsidiaries to promote Catalan culture and independentism in Catalonia and abroad are estimated at more than 2.2 million euros in recent years. Only in 2016, SOM received from the Generalitat and the Diputación de Barcelona up to 245,000 euros in grants. These grants are granted annually even though SOM has been making profits year after year. In 2016 it obtained a net profit of 213,288 euros.

The authors of the blog 'Help Catalonia' almost always refer to Spanish judges as "inquisitors"

In the heat of the business initiatives of Oriol Soler, the propaganda continues its rhythm. The blog 'Help Catalonia' is one of its core exponents. Through its website and social networks, the contents of 'Help Catalonia' focus on denouncing the miseries of Spanish democracy, highlighting the always democratic actions of politicians and activists 'indepes', telling the story of Catalonia always truffled by a secessionist bias or in requesting the freedom of the nine political prisoners.

His news production is copious and does not stop at outbursts. On December 2, he described as "Spanish terrorists" the executors of a small fire at the ERC headquarters in Cervera (Lleida).

Nor do they pay any attention to praising the actions of the Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR). On the occasion of the demonstrations of the past day 22 for the celebration in Barcelona of the Council of Minister, 'Help Catalonia' once again underlined the police brutality against peaceful Protestants that ended with "77 wounded people; 137 in the last 15 days. " For the authors of this news portal "the regional body of the Mossos is made up of Spanish agents" and forms part of "authoritarian governments".

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs watches the entire propaganda process with its hands tied. "It is very curious that our embassies tell us that, rather than promoting Catalonia, what Catalan delegations do is to denigrate and delegitimize Spain," a ministry spokesperson told the newspaper.

The 'Spanish Inquisition' is a common place for authors this blog in English. Almost always referring to Spanish judges, they qualify them as "inquisitors" and justice in general as "Spanish Inquisition."

Torra backtracks and rules out a purge in the Mossos

There will be no purge in the Mossos d'Esquadra.

The 'president', Quim Torra, after seeing all the images of the police action in Girona and in Terrassa during the Constitution Day, has changed his mind.

And Miquel Buch, 'conseller' of Interior, had to face on Monday the commissaries and the heads of all regions and units of the Catalan body and apologize for the monumental entanglement.

"The process is dead and buried " Albert Soler, columnist of the Diari de Girona: "I have never seen the FAQS"

The process also has good things like, for example, the columns of Albert Soler in the Diari de Girona. The journalist takes it as the only way worth taking it: to laughter. As a young man (Girona, 1963) he met Carles Puigdemont at the Boomerang nightclub and already sensed that the boy who was going to the disco with a suit would go far. What I did not know is that he would get to Waterloo. Enjoy the interview as I do of your articles.

Last Friday, on his own merits, the XV Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival gave him an honorary award. Do not think badly, Prisoners and Joan Manuel Serrat were also awarded prizes. -

Do you see TV3?

Yeah sure. Often, as I know the calico, to laugh at how childish their pathetic efforts are to continue deceiving the staff, or to hide the great deception of the procés, which is like wanting to hide an elephant behind a box of matches. Sometimes, few, because I really care what they emit, especially some reports or a movie. In general, however, is nothing but agitprop, but as I said, if your head is well furnished, that is if you take it as a joke, you hit a good laugh. One sees the programming of TVE, in the two channels, and if one compares them with the degeneration of "the nostra", one asks himself, like the character of Vargas Llosa: 'when did TV3 start to fuck?' -

They have turned TV3 into a nationalist rather than a national television.

What a nationalist pussy. A provincial television. The day that the lacistas agreed to climb to I do not know how many Catalan mountains, they opened all the news with such a feat, I think there was a camera and a correspondent on each hilltop. That is, either that was the most important thing that happened that day in the world, or the criteria used to highlight the news are at least peculiar. Well, nothing, at home we laugh, to see if that bunch of useless will think that I will have a hard time with their assholes. -

Rahola even has a pulpit almost daily.

Which brings us back to ask: when did TV3 start to fuck? If the condition to earn good money at the expense of all Catalans is to cook a paella to the president and commit under oath to say bullshit uncontrollably, then my grandmother did wrong to die a few years ago, because besides being illiterate, she cooked like angels Although Rahola would certainly overcome it in the first, I think that in the kitchen my grandmother would prevail, so the thing would be very close to get the television contract. The handicap of my grandmother is that the poor woman was ashamed of her illiteracy, while the Rahola looks proud, and that in today's Catalonia opens many doors.

- I have the personal theory that the Catalan press - with some exception as the Diari de Girona will have to ask for forgiveness after the process.

Forget about it. Nobody is going to apologize. Some media journalists have already come to recognize that "they were deceived." Fooled? The function of the journalist is to doubt everything, especially the government. If you are a journalist and the Catalan government tells you that we are going to be independent, that this country is going to be the Arcadia and that all the states of the world are going to queue to recognize us, your obligation is to doubt. And ask for details, and if they do not give them - because they do not give them - your obligation is to denounce that it is a farce. And if you do not want to denounce that it is a farce because you are getting profit of it, a post or a television program or, I know, a ham at Christmas, then at least keep quiet and do not follow the game. Nobody will ask for forgiveness. What will be there is more journalists and more media that will say they have been "cheated". Come on man, do not fuck me! That, between journalists. Apart, there are infectious publications, and I will give names, such as El Nacional, La República or El Directe, which do not even deserve to be classified as journalism, there is simply no way to pick them up. Propaganda pure, but so crude that it does not help.

How will it end?

How will it end? It is finished. They know each other, the only ones who ignore it are the ignorant (volunteers or morons by birth) who continue to cheer them and even vote for them. Today there is only one regional Napoleon in Waterloo speaking alone, some prisoners awaiting trial and a people who all they want is a pardon or a light condemnation for them. Nothing else. The process is dead and buried, in fact was born dead, the son of ten thousand milks. All that remains of it is people who hang little ties and meet once a week to shout in the square of his town. And listen, for me they can continue doing it until the end of time, if that is how they feel fulfilled. I will not be the one to stop going out and have a beer thinking about them. I do not care. As Rick tells Ugarte in Casablanca when he asks if he despises him: "if I ever thought about them, I would probably despise them". /

The old federalists Let's stop blaming others for our problems, or at least we should not do it without also assuming our responsibilities

I was surprised that Joaquim Nadal, in his interview with Quadern, EL PAÍS, Thursday, November 15, said that "the old Spanish federalists have disappeared". I wonder if the old federalists who have disappeared are among "the Spaniards". It seems that Nadal joins a recurring topic, almost of obligatory mention in some sectors of Catalonia, which comes to say that "there are no federalists beyond the Ebro". This topic is added to others, such as that "federalism is a past screen", or that it is "too difficult", to which I celebrate that Nadal does not join, at least now that he publicly exposes his reservations about the independence process . These topics are tactical and superficial responses to the lack of arguments against federalism, which is the solution to the problems of sovereignty and identities that most people living in a democracy in the world have adopted.

Last October 6 a great Spanish federalist meeting took place in Hospitalet, organized by Federalistes d'Esquerres - which brings together most of the Catalan federalists, young and old - with the participation of many old Spanish federalists, led by Nicolás Sartorius, founder of Comisiones Obreras, and responsible for the main Spanish progressive think tank, the Alternativas Foundation. The current general secretary of Comisiones Obreras, the main Spanish union, also participated in the event. And there were representatives from Andalusia, Aragon, Madrid and other communities. Participated by video personalities such as Baltasar Garzón and Gaspar Llamazares. More recently, the presentation of a federalist collective took place in the Basque Country, with the support of hundreds of people, led by the prestigious professor Alberto López Basaguren. The Valencian country and the Balearic islands have autonomous federalist governments. Federalistes d'Esquerres has organized events in Madrid in recent years, in which representatives of different political and social organizations have participated, starting with the mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena. "Haberlos, haylos", another thing is that it is not convenient to see them. For example, some media, and very loudly TV3, did not echo the meeting at the Hospitalet.

It is very easy to suggest that it is the Spaniards fault that there is no federalism (in fact, we would have to say that there is no better federalism, because there is federalism). It is always better to blame others. And to reproach them that some who may be federalists, or even secretly, have not defended Catalonia enough in recent years. But it is very difficult to be a federalist and to see with sympathy the dominant discourse that has been projected from Catalan politics during these last years.

MEPs blast harsh sentences for Catalan political prisoners - Amy Holden reply to Managing Editor, The Parliament Magazine

MEPs from various political groups in the European Parliament are up in arms over the excessive prison sentences the Spanish prosecutor wants to hand down to Catalan pro-independence leaders.

Amy Holden reply to Brian Johnson, Managing Editor, The Parliament Magazine:

Brian Johnson Managing Editor The Parliament Magazine
16-11-2018
Dear Mr. Johnson,
I would like to comment your article ‘MEPs blast harsh sentences for Catalan political prisoners’ by Martin Banks published 13 Nov in The Parliament Magazine.
Personally I feel that the article you have published is not an opinion but is simply blatant political propaganda, totally lacking in objectivity by omitting key facts which make it misleading and puts in question the credibility of your organization all together.
Are you simply unaware of the facts or are you completely aware and publishing paid advertorials for the Catalan secessionists?
Firstly, the headline itself insinuates that there are harsh sentences of which there are none yet.
Secondly, the article starts off mentioning that there are MEPs from various political groups in arms but neglects to mention that they include members from Italy’s 5 star, Belgium’s N-VA, Ireland’s Identity Ireland, Scotland’s SNP, Spain’s ERC and PNV amongst other nationalist parties, which is surely relevant to the stance that they take.
Thirdly, it goes on to quote about Catalonia’s right to self determination but does not mention at any point that there is no law or entity that has recognized Catalonia’s ability to self determination as a right since it applies only to colonies and Catalonia is not a Colony.
Fourthly, it insinuates that there was a referendum in Catalonia, Spain where 90% voted for Catalan independence, without mentioning that the referendum was declared illegal as it was made by and for secessionists, with no pact and was held with no basic guarantees. Furthermore the article omits that 2 and a half million people, which is more than half of the Catalan electorate, boycotted the vote following the instructions of the pro-constitutionalist parties advice, due to it being declared illegal by the Spanish court and it had no guarantees.
Fifthly, The article also quotes "Catalan leaders have been accused of crimes they have not committed based on violence that has not existed" In fact, many citizens of Catalonia were able to witness first-hand how the secessionist government used the state to undermine the state, otherwise known as sedition. It has been accredited by the civil guard investigation that public funds and public property were used to undertake the illegal referendum. In fact, the electoral census was stolen data and on the day journalists were able to vote multiple times. International observers were brought to validate the guarantees yet were unable to attest so.
Sixthly, the article goes on to state “According to the court papers, the defendants were “aware” that violence could have erupted during the attempt to bring about the independence of Catalonia, and they are accused of a “general uprising, leading to acts of force, aggression and violence.”
The truth is, we saw on live TV scenes that unraveled when leaders of the ANC and Omnium called to 16 hour long siege on a group of public servants which were on a raid in buildings ofthe diputation of Barcelona, where participants impeded the public servants from leaving and even violently broke down a door and destroyed public property. The public servants had to leave the building by the roof.
Seventhly, then the article quotes “Not only are these accusations false and made up to fit into a narrative that justifies the charge of rebellion, but they have also been refuted by the Belgian and German courts, when they refused to extradite the former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont (twice) and the ministers in exile on the grounds of rebellion”
Yet it is because they do not have equivalent crimes in their penal code and then Spain revoked the warrant for his arrest.
Eighthly, it also states “The decision to pursue the most serious charges laid against the accused has destroyed any hope that the socialist government might lead to any meaningful negotiation on the Catalan issue. The lack of political response by the Spanish authorities is provoking dramatic consequences and we will do what it is in our hands to denounce it. There has been no crime; this construction has nothing to do with reality.” I must state the obvious, Spain is a modern democratic state with a constitution that states it is indivisible as a country and it follows the rule of law. Laws were broken and now the politicians’ that broke them are going through the process of justice. There is nothing any Spanish government can do to change the acts that the Catalan government undertook.
And finally, your article ends with the following quotes “The already shrinking position of the EU as guarantor of fundamental rights would be irreversibly affected; and its silence has also contributed to make European citizens feel that the European Institutions are far away and do not really protect them as they are supposed to.”
“For all these reasons, we want to make a call to the European institutions to urgently reconsider what protecting, promoting and guaranteeing civil and political rights mean to them,” the statement added.
It seems an intentional bid to mislead the reader that civil rights are being oppressed in Spain. It is not clear which civil or fundamental right, if any, is being oppressed in Catalonia, a modern, democratic region of Spain. From my personal experience living here 16 years, I cannot say I have ever heard of a civil right being oppressed.
And furthermore the European Union leaders have given unequivocal support to Spain in this matter with Commission leader Junckers position on this matter “There is no possible mediation between democratic law and disobedience or illegality,” and then in a later interview declared “As president of the Commission, I support the position of the Spanish government. And do you know why? Because I am in favor of who respects the law,” Juncker told the Spanish daily El País in an interview. “The EU is based on the rule of law, and what my Catalan friends have done is the opposite: violating the law.”
Personally I would like to share with you my thoughts. When we spoke I noted your Scottish accent and I can see how Scottish people may feel very akin to the Catalan secession movement for obvious reasons. However it is not the same. Not only is Catalonia not a country nor has it ever been compared to Scotland, a country in it’s own right that united with the rest of the UK and could leave if it wanted to. Scotland also voted to stay open, to stay with Europe in it ́s own referendum.
Catalonia’s secession push is to break away, to put up walls, to become monolingual (Can you imagine if it were not possible to get a public school education in English in Scotland? This is what the Catalan nationalists do) and at the heart is based on hate of Spain and Spanish. It is just not comparable to the open Pro-European movement in Scotland.President Torra is openly racist with published works with strong supremacist and racist narratives that anybody can access online. He has instigated and congratulated violence via the CDRs, which are bullying, harassing, attacking people who are not secession supporters. They shout out terrorist chants at their mob protests, they spit on reporters, throw stones, potatoes, rocks and blow up powders at their perceived adversaries and the police. They shame and insult non secessionists via the press and via their protests and on social media via their influencers, calling them fascists whilst in a bizarre twist of reality, having a completely fascist and intolerant attitude themselves.
You are collaborating with this movement and soon, as they will not get what they want, they will get more violent, perhaps returning to kill as they did 30 odd years ago, and then I am sure you will personally feel awful for having collaborated and promoted their lies. You are in time to rectify and to review closely all forthcoming publications that you do about their movement and I urge you to do so.
Kind regards, Amy Holden. Catalonia, Spain
