Excuse me for writing you and make you spend your time reading me, but I have seen that Luther King’s Institute has opened the doors to Quim Torra, the supremacist who was elected in the regional parliament of Catalonia as regional President. Luther King is a world reference in civil rights and tolerance, so it is difficult to understand how the Institute could open its doors to a person with the profile of Quim Torra. I will summarize the ideas that makes me think that way with the next points:
1. Catalonia is a part of Spain where we have two official languages, Spanish and Catalan. Spanish is the mother tongue of the 55% of the population, while Catalan is for the 35%. The other 10% has non official languages as mother tongues.
2. Quim Torra has written several articles that distils cultural supremacism. He has written, for example, that Catalans who speaks Spanish are like “beasts with human shape” with “an small bump in their DNA”. (1)
3. Quim Torra is defending a separatist project based in ethnical supremacism, and recently used Slovenia’s independence as example to follow. Slovenia’s independence was the result of a short war and, after that, an ethnic cleansing was practiced. (2)
4. Catalan nationalism has a lot of racism examples against migrations. During the 30’s in XX century lot of people moved to Barcelona from other regions in Spain, as Murcia or Andalusia. In those years, members of ERC –a party which is now in the regional government- wrote about the mixture between Catalan people and people originally from Andalusia or Murcia would have consequences for “Catalan race”. (3)
5. Quim Torra participated in a tribute to Daniel Cardona, who was mayor in Molins de Rei, a town close to Barcelona and founding member of the terrorist group “Nosaltres sols”, who wrote that “The European character of Catalan is a psychic factor as opposed to the lazy and pro-African Spanish. We have to consider that the Catalan racial configuration is more purely white than the Spanish one and, therefore, Catalan is superior to the Spanish in the racial aspect." (4)
6. Heribert Barrera, who was president of the regional Parliament in Catalonia and president of ERC –a party, as I said, that is now in the regional government-, said that “The intellectual coefficient of black people of the USA is inferior to the white people”. (5)
7. Movimiento contra la Intolerancia, a prestigious tolerance movement who fights against all kind of discriminations, as xenophobia or homophobia, has denounced (6) Quim Torra due to his hate speech.
Martin Luther King represents the best of human being: humanism, equality, justice. We have a model to follow in him and his word. So it is uncomprehensible that an Institute with his name has opened its doors to a man who represents the opposite: cultural supremacism, racialism, language discrimination. In my opinion, the good memory of Martin Luther King would recommend a rectification about this mistake. As a person who have in Luther King a reference, it has been very disappointing and worrying seeing the Institute opend to Quim Torra and what he represents. I hope this letter could represented an alert to the Institute, which in order to preserve the memory of Luther King as he deserves, should be more cautious with his guests.
