Half of the population of nine European countries believe that the 'procés' is a serious problem. Germany and Belgium are the places where the image of Spain has deteriorated the most

There is confusion, however, around the political will of the Catalan population. According to the principal researcher and director of the Observatory of Image of Spain of the Real Instituto Elcano, Carmen González, there are many "do not know", something to be expected because "there is no reason to suppose that the citizens of other countries know the real distribution of the vote Catalan". Among those who claim to know the situation, there is division: 37% of those interviewed in the group of countries consider that the majority of Catalans who want independence are the majority; 12%, which are a minority and 32%, that the population of this community is "divided equally" on this subject. What is much clearer for the European population (60%) is that the rest of Spain does not want this independence and in Portugal, much closer to the Spanish news, almost the entire population knows the rejection that Catalan independence awakens in among the rest of the Spanish.

The Catalan conflict has not altered the assessment that the vast majority of respondents make of Spain in the sample countries. However, in Belgium, 17% say that the procés has negatively influenced their image of Spain; in Germany, 16% say the same and statistically significant population percentages have changed their opinion about the country worse.
