Cuixart demands that the trial for the 1-O be done in Catalonia and in Catalan

"Declaring through an interpreter launders a Spanish justice that denies me a full trial in Catalan," says.

The president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart, has requested that the trial of the sovereignty process and the referendum of October 1 – to be held in the Supreme Court (TS) in Madrid - be held in Catalonia so that it is developed entirely in Catalan.

In a statement on Saturday, the entity has reported that Cuixart - in custody in the prison of Lledoners (Barcelona) - has considered that the trial violates his linguistic rights, and has criticized: "Just declaring through an interpreter launders a Spanish justice that denies me a judgment fully in Catalan".

Òmnium has indicated that this circumstance can "harm the defense because literality and nuances are lost, and involves laying a screen between the declarant and the court, whether a defendant, a testimony or an expert."

And it has assured that "the summary of the case includes hundreds of hours of recordings and documents in Catalan that the Supreme Court is unable to understand", so the entity believes that, in order to respect the European Charter of Regional and Minority Languages, the trial would have to be done in Catalonia.

Cuixart has affirmed that keeping to the contrary demonstrates "the null sensitivity and respect of the Spanish State for the languages that coexist in its territory", and in his view it is evident that he will have a trial without guarantees.

In addition, he has stated that he wants to declare without filters and has indicated: "We will not allow for one more manipulation. We will demonstrate loudly that we have not committed any crime and that they have invented the violence they accuse us of".
