The president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, declared that the independence of Catalonia should follow the model followed by Slovenia to separate from Yugoslavia, leading to the worst sectarian conflict in Europe since World War II. In the same act, the escaped excounseler Antoni Comín assured that the secession enters in the last phase, announcing the possibility that could cause victims. Both interventions took place the same day that the paramilitary obedience squads of the independence movement cut the main access road to Catalonia, counting on the passivity of the Mossos ordered by the political command, and the eve on which the president Torra embarrassing their own and strangers retired to the abbey of Montserrat to undergo a fast of a few hours in solidarity with the defendants on hunger strike.
It is not the first time that President Torra and the independence
leaders speculate on the way of secession they want for Catalonia, but
they do recognize that a cult of the nation like the one they profess is
inseparable from the banalization of the risk of civil confrontation.
Until now, they had always pretended to ignore that the insurmountable
obstacle to bringing Catalonia to independence is not the choice of a
model to do so, but the fact that they lack a democratic majority to
adopt any. It is this lack that is revealing the true model that
inspires the political action of the independence leaders, from whom
they believe they hide their faces only because they refuse to recognize
it as theirs. Leaving public order in the hands of the CDRs and evoking
in the speeches a horizon of violence between citizens is not the
recourse of a small nation fighting for freedom against a tyranny, but
the invariable procedure of those who, now and in the past, exercise
tyranny disguising it as freedom.
The farce with which the pro-independence forces try to convince
themselves that theirs is a democratic cause has revealed in recent
days the fire from which it feeds. It is no wonder that, considering
that the tragic end of the former Yugoslavia can not be a model for
anyone, they feel proud of having contributed to the emergence of an
ultranationalist party in Spain, imagining that this reveals the deepest
nature of the democratic and constitutional system established in 1978.
In fact, a Spanish ultranationalist party discovers nothing of that
system because it is not discovered by the existence of Catalan
ultranationalist parties and organizations. What, on the other hand,
reveals the satisfaction of the latter is their need to be face to face
with those who are exactly their symmetry, in order to justify the
sectarian spiral they intend to unleash.
Demand that this claim be countered by resorting to
the most drastic measures provided by the Constitution is, in fact, a
way to prevent prematurely that the political forces present in the
Parliament assume their responsibility to maintain a president who
demonstrates every day that does not deserve to be , because there is no
institutional block, but political. As a majority force in Catalonia,
Ciudadanos can not continue to be involved in a flag that allows it to
reach agreements with ERC on public television, but not to rid the
citizens of an irresponsible prophet by delegation. Neither can ERC
continue to endorse with its passivity a strategy with which it declares
itself in disagreement, led by someone who recognizes himself as a
puppet of a cybernetic assembly, not as the president of Catalonia.
These forces can and should end the farce and conjure fire.
