The 19 full democracies of the world in 2018




 



There are only 19 countries with full democracies in the world. Almost all those countries are based in Europe and Spain is on the list.

The latest edition of The Economist Intelligence Unit's annual Democracy Index (EIU) mainly provides a snapshot of the state of democracy around the world in 2017. It studies 167 countries - excluding only microstates. Therefore in a political view of the entire estimated world population.

It is a source of joy for Spaniards and Europeans. But it is also a call to reflection: full democracies only cover 4.5% of the world's people. Therefore, it is an indicator that popular confidence in the government, elected representatives and political parties continues to fall and affect systems that were thought to be consolidated.
