The lack of coordination is the feature that unifies the independence movement in its last chapter of crisis. The hunger strike initiated by several Catalan political prisoners has divided tremendously separatism, not only at the party level (ERC avoided it, for example), but also inside the seccesionist entities.
It did not matter that the former president of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), Jordi Sànchez, was, along with Jordi Turull, one of the first to assume the fast (later joined by Josep Rull and Joaquim Forn). The protest has not had the prominence that some members of the organization wish it had at least within the entity.
Some voices of the ANC feel that President Elisenda Paluzie has not participated in the "collective fasts" organized by former national secretary Vicenç Relats under the slogan "enough hostages", that although it has the logistical support of the entity did not arise of formal spaces and has not had the desired echo.
The disorganization regarding the hunger strike of the prisoners and the fasts in support of them caused the ANC to call an emergency meeting of the leadership convened by a group of national secretaries unhappy with the "inaction" and "lack of support "to protest, reported El Periódico.
ANC: a meeting without agreement to assess the hunger strike
The national secretaries got the 26 signatures needed to convene the urgent meeting, held last Sunday in Barcelona. The central theme of the meeting was to evaluate the proposals to support the action of the prisoners and extract revenues beyond the walls of the prison of Lledoners.
Sources of the ANC consider that the hunger strike can be a springboard to retake the "permanent mobilization in the streets" and thus generate a new "momentum" to "re-proclaim the Catalan Republic." And they believe that the environment of Paluzie does not reach to see all the possibilities that open the protest of the prisoners.
The ANC has limited itself to the propaganda gestures, sending letters to the Human Rights Commissions of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and making a march to Lledoners to draw a "circle of light". But little more than that, they criticize the harshest bases, which ask that they act in a "reactive way".
While one sector of the entity advocates "strong mobilizations" to accompany the fasting of prisoners, the Standing Committee appeals to "caution" and is cautious about the possibility of "falling into electoral traps." And, after a long meeting last week, none of the sectors managed to agree.
