The amendment, presented by the group of the Greens, has been rejected by an overwhelming majority: 423 votes against, 150 in favor and 31 abstentions.
The plenary session of the European Parliament rejected on Thursday to include an amendment of the group of the Greens that made reference to the "concern" of international organizations for the intervention of the Spanish police during the celebration of the illegal referendum of the 1-O of 2017, in the framework of a resolution on the right to demonstrate peacefully.
The amendment has been rejected by an overwhelming majority: 423 votes against, 150 in favor and 31 abstentions.
Without mentioning Catalonia
The rejected paragraph is a "recital" in which it refers to the "concern about the accusations of disproportionate use of force" by the security forces in Catalonia of 1-O, which were expressed days after the referendum by the Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe and other "United Nations human rights experts". The amendment in question was signed by two European Green MEPs, the French Eva Joly and the Belgian Philippe Lamberts.
On the other hand, the resolution that has gone ahead condemns the restrictions in several countries on the freedom of assembly and denounces the use of violent and disproportionate interventions by state authorities during protests and peaceful demonstrations, without ever talking about Catalonia.
The European Parliament demands transparent, impartial, independent and effective investigations when there are suspicions that a disproportionate use of force has been used. He also criticizes the intervention of violent protesters undermines the legitimacy of peaceful protests and calls for journalists to be allowed to work freely.
